Yambol is a town in southeastern Bulgaria. It is the administrative center of Yambol region and the only settlement in the municipality of Yambol.
LOCATION
The city is located in the southeastern part of Bulgaria, in Toundzha-Strandzha Lowland. The city is spread along the two sides of Toundzha River, which is the fourth largest river in Bulgaria. Yambol Municipality has a unique structure - it is a city-municipality, which borders on the towns and villages on Toundzha Municipality on all sides.
The city is twinned with Villejuif city, France, the cooperation being in the field of education and culture and having 30 years of history by now. Other twin cities are are Berdiansk, Ukraine and Izhevsk, Russia. With the Polish Cheradz the connections go back to 1980.
HISTORY
Although the surrounding area has been inhabited since the Neolithic, and was the location of the Thracian royal city of Cabyle (later conquered by Phillip II of Macedon and the Romans, but destroyed by the Avars in 583), what is today Yambol was founded by Roman Emperor Diocletian in 293 as Diospolis ("city of Zeus"). The name later evolved through Diampolis and Diamboli to become Yambol.
As the Slavs and Bulgars arrived in the Balkans in the Middle Ages, the fortress was contested by the Bulgarian Empire and the Byzantines until 1373, when it fell to the Ottomans after a prolonged siege.
Yambol (Ottoman Turkish Yanbolu) was an important centre of the Ottoman Empire until liberated by Russian forces in January 1878 to become part of Eastern Rumelia and later Bulgaria after the Unification in 1886.
NATURAL SIGHTS AND MONUMENTS OF CULTURE
There are two protected natural areas within the municipal boundaries: Ormana countryside, which is located 2 km away from Yambol, where Loddon Lily and meadow-saffron fields can be found.
The History Museum in Yambol has different objects that follow the whole history of the city and the region starting from the Neolith till nowardays. A lot more things can be seen in Yambol - a Roman Bath, Yambol Medieval Fortress, the only preserved covered market from the 15th century, one of the biggest art galleries with more than 3 500 pictures and sculptures. In St George Church there is a unique wooden iconostasis mastered by Debar school icon-painters.
The church was built in 1737 and is the centre of the cultural and religious life in the town. Findings from this region can even be found in the Louvre in Paris and the Museum of Archeology in Sofia.
There is a planetarion in Yambol, which is the only one in southeast Bulgaria and thousands of students and citizens visit it every day.
Yambol is a city of traditions, a city with more than 17 centuries of history and the birth place of many intellectuals like the inventor of the computer - John Atanasov, having his origins in the city. The first professor of pedagogy in Bulgaria was born here, as well as the world famous painters John Popov and George Papazov.
TRANSPORT
There are regular bus lines to and from Sliven, Nova Zagora, Elhovo, Sredec and other towns. Th railroad line Sofia- Plovdiv - Burgas passes through Yambol.
